What to expect from counselling

I offer a free, 30 minute, first initial session where we can discuss what brings you to therapy and what you would like to achieve. I will also share with you the way I work and we can discuss if we can work together.

I will give you some information to take away with you and take down some contact information and basic personal details, with your permission. We will also talk about confidentiality and keeping records safe.

If you feel that you would like to go ahead with counselling sessions, we will book a date and time in that suits us both in the first session, or you can take some time at home to consider it and then get back in touch with me.

Your sessions will be at the same time, same day, each week, unless otherwise agreed. The sessions will last 50 minutes and this is your time to share any thoughts or feelings you want to.

I offer short-term and long-term counselling and this can be reviewed as we go along. You may want to make the decision about ending counselling after a number of sessions, when it feels right for you to start bringing the work to a close. This can be discussed together.

There is no set way that counselling should be ‘done’, no right or wrong answer. Although I use the person-centred approach and always work within the ethical framework, I believe that the therapeutic value is created in the relationship between counsellor and client and therefore every client has a unique and personal counselling journey.

Confidentiality is a key component of the counselling relationship and something I stringently uphold. There are specific exceptions to this, which ensure we are working safely and ethically; details of which will be provided to you at our first session together and discussed fully with you.
